Substation Recklinghausen - Museum Electricity and Life

"Electricity in every device". What used to an advertising 90 years ago, has become our everyday life. The Museum Electricity and Life, which is situated in the substation that was built in 1928, tells the story of this evolution. During a time travel on more than 2,500 sqm of exhibition area, the visitors learn how rapidly electricity revolutionised our lives in just more than 100 years.

On your tour of the museum, you will see a steam engine, a water turbine and a steam turbine, the vehicle hall with historic electric vehicles and the substation, which is a listed building. Here you will learn how the electric current gets into the socket. "Working", "healing", "living" and "entertainment" are only a few of the exhibition themes, by which the history of electricity is told further in the course of the exhibition. In the walk-in depot, a shoe-fitting fluoroscope and a smoke consumer are stored among many other objects from the extensive museum collection. The cinema of the museum completes the "advertising" area with a collage of historic cinema advertisements. A highlight of the museum are the numerous touchable objects, including giant plasma globes, an almost one hundred years old tram, historical household appliances and already "historical" video games, such as "Ping“ and "Tetris“.
